It is popularly assumed that your page’s main navigational menu should be anchored on the left side of your website. A 2001 study (Nelson and Tahir) showed that fully one-third of high traffic websites have left-justified navigation, often with site identification or more navigation along the top of the screen, in what is known as “Inverted-L formation”. But though the “Inverted-L” is common, does that mean it is necessary?

と、いわゆる「逆L字型のナビゲーション」について記事があります。「パンくずナビ」の話もあるのですが、そこは省略します。

左右でテストした結果、操作上とくに差はないといった報告があるようです。ただし、このナビゲーションをひとつのサイトマップとして視覚的に把握することを踏まえると (左上から読む習慣を踏まえると)、右に比べて速く知ることができるので左に配置したほうが有効だという意見に落ちつくようです。

業界内ではたぶん一般的な逆L字のナビゲーションですが、近頃では (なぜか) 右にレイアウトするサイトもよく見かけるようになりました。一種のトレンドのようにもとれますが。

個人的には、左から読ます文章を扱っている以上、ナビゲーションは左にあったほうがいいと思います。理由はカンタンでナビゲーションが左にある場合と右にある場合とで、コンテンツとナビゲーション間の視線の動く距離が違うからです。

極論をいうと、ナビゲーションとコンテンツとを意識させること自体が本当は間違いで、カーソルをクリックし (いわゆるコンテクスト・メニューのように) 必要なときにだけ出現するほうがいいのかも知れませんね。

What is usability?
‘Usability’ is an umbrella term that encompasses two related concepts:

• Usability is an attribute of the quality of a system:

• “We need to create a usable intranet”
  Usability is a process or set of techniques used during a design and development project:

  “We need to include usability activities in this project”

This second aspect is sometimes described as usability engineering, and is more accurately described as user-centred design.

‘Usability’ refers to the quality of a system and the process of designing a usable system

と「なんぞや」からはじまるこの記事ですが、長々とユーザビリティについて書かれているので参考になります。
